The Feminist Club: Our Mission

WELCOME TO THE CENTRAL GWINNETT HIGH SCHOOL FEMINIST CLUB

The front of Central Gwinnett High School, featuring an empty bus lane. Taken during sunset.

Amidst an objectively bland lecture, plagued by the boredom imbued within me from an understimulating presentation projected upon a classroom board, I — a then junior — was hit with an epiphany: We need a stronger feminist community at Central.

I sat for a moment, not giving it much thought, but ideas continued to fester and grow in the hour I had left of the class. Having been a relatively reserved individual, I was extremely hesitant to entertain the thought of starting my club, but it was a thought I had nonetheless. It was something.

Cut to second period, I find myself brainstorming ideas on loose notebook paper instead of completing the AP Statistics warmup expected of me (Sorry Ms. Colby, but at least I passed the exam, right?)

Now, on a September Tuesday morning, I am preparing for our very first meeting tomorrow afternoon. So why should you care?

Our Mission

The CGHS Feminist Club serves as an opportunity for students, regardless of identity, to participate in meaningful discussions regarding feminist and women’s issues while simultaneously having access to available volunteer work, academic resources, and peer support.

Each meeting will introduce a topic of interest related to feminism. We aim to fuel student-driven discussions by opening the door to topics that students may not have the ability to discuss in other spaces while also conducting community-building activities and activist work. For example, one goal of ours is to host a candlelight vigil in honor of victims of domestic violence. This would be paired with a drive dedicated to products for a women's homeless shelter, as well as a presentation centering on abusive relationships and how the patriarchy simultaneously upholds and encourages their existence.

Our meetings are bi-monthly, on the first and third Wednesday of most months, with Ms. Wurschinger (Room 8112) from 2:30 to 3:30 PM.

Regardless of how knowledgeable you are regarding feminist issues, this club will be a safe environment for you to voice your thoughts and concerns, something that could benefit the student body greatly.

Our Executive Board consists of Adna Cufurovic, Marissa Sunder, Roxana Perez-Gomez, Elizabeth Adebesin, Lindsay Sosa, and Stella Houchins.

Our Blog

Students have the opportunity to host chat forums and submit opinionated pieces regarding feminist issues. This can be done in exchange for service hours, as part of our mission is to assist the student body and provide peer support. We understand that balancing academics and extracurriculars can be overwhelming.

Our articles will be organized depending on the subject at hand (politics, art, and so forth). Alongside this, I am excited to explain what our Feature Femme section entails. To celebrate the efforts of accomplished female students and staff at Central, we will be conducting interviews throughout the year, which will be located there.

To be considered an official member of the club, join our blog! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to any of our officers via Remind (@2324fem), the club Instagram (@cghsfeminist), or Ms. Wurschinger (Jennifer.Wurschinger@gcpsk12.org)

We suggest subscribing to our newsletter as well, which can be found on the homepage. Perhaps you will see something in your inbox soon.
